Learner autonomy is the idea that students can and should take responsibility for their own learning, in order to be more successful learners. These effective learning methods and strategies, as well as skills, should be developed as early as possible in learning. During the course, the teachers learn various techniques to promote and help students' autonomy and independence. Participants will learn and create – and then teach their students – immediately applicable methods and practices that support self-directed learning. This course will explore how teachers can help their learners develop their independence and become autonomous, active, invested partners in the learning process.
Aims and objectives:
According to the principle of learner’s autonomy, students are able and necessary to take responsibility for their own learning: what, but especially: how they learn. Self-directed learning requires learning to learn, as well as developing the ability to set goals, reflecting on their own progress, and identify learning opportunities outside the classroom. Participants will acquire a range of techniques for promoting and facilitating effective learning habits, strategies and study skills. The course will look at team building and cooperative practices that enable learners to work together as a team, as well as individual learning activities within and outside the language classroom. Participants will also have a chance to adapt, create and help their learners to create materials for independent learning. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with a range of tried and tested methods for developing learner autonomy, including blended learning methods.
